Is LASIK Surgery Right For You?

July 22, 2020

Thinking about LASIK? Here’s What You Need to Know

At The Laser Center of Coral Gables, our highly trained staff use cutting edge equipment to help Miami, FL residents achieve clear vision. Is this procedure a good fit for you?

How Does LASIK Work?

In a LASIK procedure, the eye surgeon uses a specialized laser to adjust the shape of your corneas. This changes the way light is focused on your eyes. Images will be clear instead of the blurs characteristic of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

LASIK can create dramatic and permanent vision improvement for the right candidates. This procedure is highly safe, with years of medical research backing it up.

When Isn’t LASIK Recommended?

Not everyone is a good fit for LASIK. Your eye doctor may not recommend you for the procedure if you have certain illnesses or eye issues including:

  • herpes simplex around the eye area
  • corneal thinning (keratoconus)
  • a previous eye injury
  • chronic dry eyes (LASIK can make this worse)
  • cataracts
  • glaucoma
  • age-related vision changes

Other possible complications include overall health issues that impact your immune system and whether or not your vision is stable. People who participate in contact sports that involve blows to the head are at risk of eye injury after LASIK.

You may also be advised against the procedure if you have very poor vision or relatively good vision. In the first case, there is a limit to how much of the cornea can safely be reshaped. Meanwhile, if your vision is relatively clear, a minor improvement may not be worth the expense and healing time.

What if you aren’t a good candidate for traditional LASIK? Your eye doctor may suggest alternative surgeries and technologies such as photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) or implantable lenses.

Note that all of these are general guidelines. Your eye surgeon will consider your specific case, health history, and vision goals before recommending you for refractive eye surgery.
