Before Surgery

After you choose to have laser eye surgery in Miami, you will need an initial eye evaluation from your optometrist. This will help us figure out whether or not you’re a viable candidate for LASIK.  Your Optometrist will provide you with an eye examination and refer you to The Laser Center of Coral Gables for a free consultation which will determine if you are a good candidate for refractive surgery. Patients that wear contact lenses, should be out of their contacts for at least a week before the consultation at the Laser Center of Coral Gables. This will ensure the best results for your procedure. Always mention any medications you’re taking to your doctor, whether they’re over-the-counter or prescription. After this initial evaluation, you will know if you’re a good candidate, what the risks and benefits of laser eye surgery are, what financing options are available and finally how you can experience life without glasses and contacts.

During Surgery

Laser eye surgery generally takes a few minutes.  The procedure is performed in the operating room where you will lie on your back. Prior to entering the operating room, you are provided with medication to help you relax and numbing drops are placed in your eye to ensure you do not feel any sensation. The laser equipment creates a flap on your cornea. The laser then reshapes the cornea correcting the refractive errors. The flap is then folded back into place completing the procedure.  This process takes seconds, upon completion the doctor will ask you to sit on the table and look at a clock on the wall approximately five feet away from where you will be able to tell him the time. A shield will be placed over the eye at the end of the procedure to protect the eye. You will not be able to drive and may experience a bit of drowsiness after surgery and will need someone to drive you home.

After Surgery

After laser eye surgery, you may feel your eye is itching and a bit of discomfort. Both eyes may want to tear or water up, and your vision will most likely be blurry. If you experience severe pain, contact our Laser center. The next day you will need to come back for your first post-op visit, we will remove your shield and test your vision. To prevent infection please follow the doctor’s instructions. You must also refrain from wearing creams, lotions, or make-up for two weeks after laser eye surgery. Vision may fluctuate for the first few months following LASIK surgery.
